At Cedar Hills UCC, we understand that music can take us places where words alone cannot. We are committed to singing and sharing a variety of musical styles that deepen our spirits, raise our souls, and bring us closer to God. In our worship we are likely to sing traditional hymns, Latin American or Celtic chants, and hear a choral piece ranging from classical to gospel to Joni Mitchell or Pete Seeger.
We are delighted to welcome Colin Shepard as our new Musical Director. Colin was raised in Tucson Arizona after being adopted from Russia. He sang in the Tucson Boys Chorus and, in high school, led his own 40-member choir. Colin moved to Portland in 2008 and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Performance from Portland State University, where he recently finished a graduate teaching position in opera and choir accompanying. He took some time off to serve as principal accompanist with the Portland Columbia Symphony Orchestra, and also worked with Northwest Children’s Theater and Portland Center Stage. He has been pianist at Kairos-Milwaukie UCC for the past six years. This last year he helped curate an experimental secular and pop music service once a month at First Congregational UCC. Colin is currently finishing his master’s degree in piano performance at PSU, and concluding four years with the PSU Chamber Choir as a baritone and accompanist under Ethan Sperry. He will be traveling with the Chamber Choir to compete in an international choir competition in Bali later this month. Along the way, Colin has accompanied opera greats Frederica von Stade, Angela Meade, and Vincent Cole and played for opera competitions internationally.
Interested in joining the choir? Come join us Thursday nights, 7:00 to 8:30 pm, in the sanctuary. We welcome any and all who want to sing together and help us lead the congregation in worship.
No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s musical journey, you’re welcome here!
