MISSION COMMITTEE:  Immigrant Justice (Sanctuary)

Action Alerts / Upcoming Events

Jun 30, 2020     Although we remain joyous the Supreme Court decision to keep DACA in place for now, the Trump Administration is already proposing a new Administrative rule that would effectively end the asylum process for immigrants fleeing their home country in fear.

The proposed rule raises the initial "credible fear" interview to impossibly high standards - severely limiting their opportunity for immigrants seeking asylum explain their fears for returning to their home country.

The rule would also allow border officers and judges to deny asylum applications without a court hearing, and fast-track deportations.

Overall, this proposed rule removes processes that have historically provided protection for those seeking asylum from their countries, violates the human rights of people seeking protection, and creates further barriers to an already unjust and complicated asylum process.

We must not let the Trump administration practically end asylum! We have until July 15 to write and submit comments. We need your help submitting comments against this proposed rule to the Federal Register.

Please note:  Unlike writing comments to legislators, the comments we submit to the Federal Register should be personalized from a template response, so it is counted as an individual comment. If you have time, feel free to write a longer story behind the impact of this decision!

  1. Submit a public comment: Use the click-to-comment campaign link to learn more and submit your comment to the administration today! The click-to-comment campaign will close 10 AM PST, July 15.

  2. Take the #Comments4Asylum pledge: After submitting your comment, take the #Comments4Asylum pledge and get three other people to join you. You can reach out one-on-one or tag people on social media!
(Sample social media post: My faith called me to submit a comment against the administration’s plan to end asylum. I am pledging to get three others to speak out for those seeking safety too! 3. Write a personalized letter:

Send a handwritten letter to the administration about why the U.S. must protect asylum seekers. Use your own experiences, stories, perspectives, values and research. See resources at the end of the toolkit. Handwritten letters and other unique comments are key to helping slow down this cruel plan. Note: you can comment online AND send a letter, there is no limit.

To count, the letter must reference: “DHS/EOIR; RIN 1125-AA94; EOIR Docket No. 18-0002.”
The letter must be postmarked by July 15, 2020.
